Overview

I provide consultative and ongoing treatment services to adults, adolescents and families for a variety of concerns ranging from daily stressors to clinical depression, anxiety, and bereavement. I would describe my style as warm, interactive, and down-to-earth. Please find more detailed information about service types and specialties below.

Consultation Services

Whether you are unsure if therapy is needed or perhaps looking for a second opinion, it can be helpful to meet with a professional for a time limited consultation. Consultations typically entail meeting for 1-3 sessions after which I will provide my clinical impressions and when indicated, treatment recommendations.

Individual Therapy

In my work with individuals, I take a collaborative, strengths-based approach. I value authenticity in the therapeutic relationship to support greater self-understanding and deeper connections with others. My work draws most prominently from cognitive behavioral, relational, and mindfulness based approaches, all of which I believe provide people with both new insights and practical tools to live life more fully and genuinely.  My clinical work is also strongly influenced by my personal study of yoga and meditation. I believe that these types of contemplative practices can positively impact mental and physical health.

Adolescent Treatment

In my work with pre-teen and adolescent youth, I take a developmental and systems approach— appreciating that children grow within the rich context of their families, schools, and greater communities. I seek to help families navigate bumps along the road and to face developmental challenges with greater understanding and compassion. I am trained in cognitive behavioral therapy, an evidence based treatment for pediatric anxiety and depression/mood lability. I also have training in family systems therapy and in Collaborative Problem Solving, approaches which help families learn more effective ways to manage conflict and build communication skills. Depending on a child’s age and concerns, sessions typically include a combination of individual, family, and parenting work. In my individual therapy, I am currently working with ages 12 and older. However, parent guidance sessions for parents of younger children are available (see next section).

Parent Guidance

Sessions with parents alone are typically necessary as part of my work with an adolescent. In addition, some parents find it helpful to come in without their children being in treatment to learn new techniques and/or discuss the stressors involved with parenting. My work with parents is based on the belief that parenting is both one of life's most rewarding and most demanding of jobs. Hectic households, challenging behaviors, opposing parental viewpoints, and temperamental mismatches (to name a few) can all contribute to parenting stress, dissatisfaction, and fatigue. I strive to help parents (re)gain feelings of efficacy and joy in their parenting roles and to maximize their capacity to be a source of validation and support for their children.  I have been trained in a number of empirically validated parenting programs including Webster Stratton’s The Incredible Years, Barkley’s program for children with ADHD and/or defiant behavior, Collaborative Problem Solving, and SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions).
